Show Summary

We often forget that what got us to a certain level of success is not necessarily what will get us to the next level. In order to achieve our potential and reach new levels of success, we need to be aware of the things that might be holding us back. In this article, we'll learn about the number one sabotaging tendency that we all have: the judge. By understanding how the judge operates, we can start to take steps to weaken its power and get out of our own way.

Here are the steps you need to follow to also get productivity, self-improvement, and mastery:

  1. Pay attention to your emotions and manage them accordingly
  2. Give a name for your master Saboteur, the Judge so you can identify it quicker
  3. Use mental fitness techniques, I call them the 2-minute Mini Mental Vacations, to reset your brain.

1. Pay attention to your emotions and manage them accordingly

In order to not get in your own way, it is important to pay attention to your emotions and judge yourself accordingly. This means being aware of when you are feeling stressed, anxious, or resentful, and taking a step back to assess the situation. It is also important to be aware of when you are judging yourself, the people around you, and your external circumstances. Once you are aware of these patterns, you can begin to work on weakening your Judge by doing things like taking a mental vacation or working on contingency plans.

2. Give a name for your master Saboteur, the Judge so you can identify it quicker

In order to get a name for your Judge, think about its personality and come up with a clever name that represents that. For example, my judge is the "Itty Bitty Shitty Committee." One of my client's Judge is called "Dr. Tony's Nemesis." Another client's Judge is called "Negative Nancy." Someone else also calls her judge "Denise" because she knew someone who's always being negative, and that person's name is Denise. So it doesn't matter if it's a real name or it's a clever name. You just have to name your Judge and go with that. It can also be "the Destroyer", "the Know at all", or "the Sourpuss", no matter what that is. Give you Judge a name, and then you can call it out quickly whenever it occurs, then retrain your brain to shut it down.

3. Use Mental Fitness exercises to reset your brain.

The third step in overcoming your Judge Saboteur is to take mini mental vacations. These are two-minute reset periods, what I called Mini Mental Vacations, that help retrain your brain to a higher level of positive intelligence. During these vacations, you are focusing on your current state of self not your personal life, work, and how you treat other people. When I walked through these exercises with one of the night ICU nursing managers who just finished her 12-hour shift, she felt she can go on for another 12-hour. These mental fitness training, when performed consistently for minimum 6 weeks, have shown by third party study to improve your sleep, team productivity, sales, and creativity.

The Saboteur within is based on the principle of the "judge" - the universal saboteur that we all have a predisposition to exaggerate. This study combines cognitive behavior psychology, positive psychology, neuroscience, and performance sciences. By understanding and recognizing the Judge, we can begin to take steps to weaken its hold on us. This will allow us to better achieve our goals and live happier, more productive lives.
