Breaking the 147-Day Sales Cycle:
Why Women's Health Innovation Deserves Better
Healthcare innovation is challenging for everyone, but for women founders in women's health, the hurdles often feel insurmountable. As a former cardiothoracic surgery PA who witnessed countless innovations die in procurement, I've seen firsthand how great solutions get trapped in endless cycles of "just one more meeting."

The Hidden Barriers in Women's Health Innovation
The statistics tell only part of the story: while less than 3% of venture capital funding goes to women-owned businesses, these companies consistently outperform, generating 35% higher ROI and 12% higher revenue than their male counterparts. But the real challenges run deeper.
In my TEDx talk, "The 3% Problem: Why Women-Led Healthcare Innovation is So Hard," I identified three Gatekeeper Myths that systematically hold women founders back. Understanding these barriers is the first step to breaking through them.
The Mental Moat: Turning Self-Doubt into Strength
The Mental Moat manifests as that inner voice questioning if you're "ready" to be in the spotlight. I experienced this firsthand during my surgical career, where being a woman with an accent led me to question my ability to influence change. But here's what I learned: your unique perspective isn't a weakness—it's your superpower.
Women founders often bring a deeper understanding of user needs, especially in women's health. For instance, one of our clients revolutionized postpartum care monitoring because she personally experienced the gaps in current systems. Her "imposter syndrome" nearly prevented her from pursuing the innovation, but once she reframed her experience as expertise, she secured partnerships with three major health systems.
The Perception Drawbridge: Transforming Barriers into Bridges
The Perception Drawbridge isn't just about external barriers—it's about the invisible walls high achievers build around themselves. I see this pattern repeatedly: brilliant women founders who trust their abilities but become victims of their own perfectionism.
Think of it like wearing a blindfold while juggling fireballs. You're skilled enough to keep them in the air, but you can't see that there's a safer, more effective way to achieve your goals. These founders often take on every task, from high-level strategy to day-to-day operations, thinking "If I want it done right, I have to do it myself."
One founder in our network was working 80-hour weeks, personally handling everything from investor presentations to social media posts. She had a talented team but couldn't let go. The result? Burnout loomed, deals moved slowly, and despite her incredible effort, growth plateaued. She was so busy doing everything that she couldn't focus on what mattered most.
The solution isn't working harder—it's working smarter through strategic delegation, automation, and elimination of non-essential tasks. When this founder finally learned to let go, her company's growth tripled in six months.
The City Watch: Navigating Systemic Challenges
The City Watch represents the deeply entrenched systemic challenges in healthcare innovation, particularly in women's health. The statistics are sobering: less than 2% of medical research funding goes to pregnancy, childbirth, and female reproductive health. This isn't just a funding gap—it's a fundamental oversight in healthcare innovation.
Historical data reveals a troubling pattern: until 1993, women were largely excluded from clinical trials. Even today, just 8.8% of NIH grant spending from 2013 to 2023 was dedicated to women's health research. But change is coming. The White House Conference on Women's Health Research recently announced nearly $1 billion in investments to address this historical underfunding.
Despite these challenges, innovative companies are breaking through. We're seeing breakthroughs in AI-enabled ultrasounds for early pregnancy screening and advanced wearables for women's cardiovascular health. These successes happened because founders learned to navigate the system strategically, building alliances instead of fighting bureaucracy.
Successful women founders are learning to navigate these systems strategically. Instead of fighting the bureaucracy, they're building alliances. One founder in our network turned a 147-day sales cycle into a 45-day process by mapping the actual (not just official) decision-making structure in her target hospitals.
Building Your Breakthrough Strategy
The landscape for women's health innovation is shifting, but success requires more than just a great product. Here's what's working for today's successful founders:
- Evidence-Based Storytelling: Don't just share data—contextualize it. Show how your solution fits into the larger healthcare ecosystem.
- Strategic Relationships: Build connections before you need them. The best deals often come through warm introductions.
- Focused Scale: Instead of trying to solve everything at once, prove your model in a specific use case, then expand.
- Value Translation: Help stakeholders understand not just what your solution does, but how it impacts their specific metrics and goals.
The Path Forward: From Innovation to Impact
The emergence of FemTech has created unprecedented opportunities. We're seeing innovations across the spectrum:
- Fertility and reproductive health technology
- Menopause management solutions
- Maternal care programs
- Women-specific cardiovascular monitoring
- Mental health platforms designed for women's needs
But having a great solution isn't enough. You need a system that works—a way to navigate the complexities of healthcare sales and scaling without getting stuck in endless cycles of meetings and maybes.

Healthcare Entrepreneurs!
I can help you gain visibility and credibility in the right circles so you can accelerate your mission and profitability!
After overcoming burnout working in surgery, I went back to my roots in neuroscience and public health. I learned the importance of building key human relationships with my team throughout our organization.
While helping healthcare executives and entrepreneurs to get out of the day-to-day operation of their practice, I realized I needed more visibility and more connections to reach my ideal clients.
Once I set out to be highly visible in the right circles, I was able to leverage my network of strategic partners to convert clients 5x higher than any other marketing channel I had tried previously.
Now I help healthcare change-makers to accelerate their impact and increase profitability by gaining visibility and credibility with the right strategic partners.
My clients no longer worry about where their next client is coming from, the need to plan additional budget for ads spending, or losing the ability to connect with others because their social media account is shut down.
If you want to share your social mission with the world and gain pivotal supporters that become loyal clients... then you are in the right place, with the right consultant who is also a recovered clinician.
